Our strength and approach in storytelling is in telling the “why”. We focus less on the parts and pieces, the “how” something is being done, and more on the underlying passions and drivers of why it’s being done.
I think that’s why people enjoy our films. The human story behind an accomplishment or vision is easier to connect with. Getting people interested in you is a powerful way of getting people interested in what you are doing.
Heart wins over mind.
Stone vs. heart.
Building a frame.
Stories need to be mostly singular.
Finding out what is most true about your subject or the individual you are talking with isn't easy.
Don’t get distracted with gear. It’s better to get the shot than to get the shot. Technology is meant to minimize distraction. Don’t let it cause distraction.
How to find what is true in your story.
When looking for the "why" use a shotgun approach. The story is in a specific place, you’ll never get there with specific questions.
Like the animal game, “Is it bigger than a dog?” is better question than “Is it a Yak?”
We ask, "why do you make art?"
Side note, who you talk with determines the success of the film. Content. Be selective, do your research.
The artist who didn't want to be put in a box.
Reality. You are hired or assigned to communicate specifics. There are always "must haves" unless your making films on artist.
But telling a broader story that naturally encompasses those "must haves" reaches a broader audience.
Recap of Directing:
So that is it for directing
Better stories need less transitions, but every edit requires you knowing how to make good transitions.
Here's an example of an edit saved by a transition. Although this one wasn't smooth.
I know a story is done when I can watch it and not pay attention because all the transitions are smooth and working.
Music controls emotion. Sometimes the words are not there to tell the emotional story. Use music.
Music takes you somewhere. It is an environment.
Every sound and word should flow with the rhythm and mood of the music. Editing is kind of like writing music. Story telling is composing.
Places to find music:
Some of our best use of music.
Films are pointless if nobody sees them.
In closing. Under wraps.
